The Capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) is known as the largest living Rodent in the world, found mainly in South America. They are also known as Water Hogs, Carpincho, Capivara, Chigüiro, Ronsoco, Coconut Dogs, etc. It is related to Guinea Pigs and other larger rodents.
They are semiaquatic animals that live in densely forested areas near bodies of water, such as lakes, rivers, swamps, etc. Their diet is largely herbivorous, grazing mainly on greens, aquatic plants, fruit and tree bark.
Their feet are webbed, allowing them to swim with ease and live on muddy shores without much trouble. They can hold their breath for 5 minutes!
Highly social and docile in nature, they’ve even acquired a reputation of being the ‘chillest’ animals on earth – they’re super friendly, so much so that they’ve been seen co-existing even alongside some would-be predators!
